Chugach Whistle Stop
*Due to this year's heavy snowfall in the Kenai Mountains, the Glacier Discovery Train won't begin service south of Portage until June 1, 2012 or after. This date is subject to change, depending on the rate of snow melt.
The Alaska Railroad's Whistle Stop opens the door t
o a myriad of outdoor recreation possibilities -- day trips, hiking, overnight camping, wilderness picnics, family retreat, glacier sightseeing, or wildlife viewing. Imagine. And you're only a few short hours from downtown Anchorage.
This remote experience is only accessible by way of train. The Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop features a low-impact gravel path with benches and incredible scenic views along the way.
Opt to hike alone or join a Chugach National Forest Service Ranger for a fun and informative journey. For more ambitious trekkers, there's a 3.4-mile trail that takes you right to the face of the glacier.
Whistle Stop hikers have from 1:45pm to 4:30pm to complete the hike and meet the train.
