At what locations is the Alaska Railroad Corporation hiring?
We hire at many locations across the railroad system. Management and professional positions are generally located in Anchorage, Alaska. Non-management opportunities can be found throughout the Alaska Railroad system from Fairbanks to Seward.

Can you send me an employment application?
You may request a hard copy employment application by contacting the Human Resources Department; however, by establishing an Applicant Profile on Workplace Alaska, a prospective candidate has their secure application readily available by user name and password for any position that comes available.

How old do I have to be to work at the Alaska Railroad?
With the exception of the Tour Guides (see below), a person must be at least 18 years old to be employed at the Alaska Railroad Corporation.

Tell me more about the Tour Guide program.
Each year Anchorage high school students are selected to participate in a 10-week high school elective course taught at the King Career Center. This course teaches customer service skills, public speaking, CPR, First Aid, and Alaska history, geography, economics, current issues and biology. See your high school counselor for more information. Classes generally start in January of each year. Tour guides receive rail pass privileges, have the opportunity to meet people from all around the world, develop lifetime skills, gain valuable work experience and have the possibility of future advancement with the Alaska Railroad.

I am interested in becoming a Locomotive Engineer. When do you recruit and how would I get trained?
If you would like to become a Locomotive Engineer, you need to apply for a Locomotive Engineer/ Conductor Trainee position. These are generally posted in January or February each year in preparation for the summer season.

Apprenticeships at the Railroad. How do I get one and what is the curriculum?
Apprenticeship opportunities are posted on Workplace Alaska. Apprenticeships are typically found in the Mechanical Department for work as a Locomotive Mechanic or a Carman. Those selected for apprenticeships will be in training for three years, completing 6,000 hours of on-the-job training. On their own time, apprentices must successfully complete seven (7) Railway Educational Bureau lessons per month for two years and maintain a 90 percent average on all lessons. Lessons must be completed by the end of two years. In addition, apprentices participate a quarterly review with the Apprenticeship Committee. This includes review of safety performance, attendance records, lesson completion, step increase, and work process evaluation. Successful completion of the apprenticeship is a condition of employment.

How do I update my application?
Once you have established your Applicant Profile on Workplace Alaska, you can update your information as frequently as you wish by using your personal user name and password.

Follow the instructions carefully. There are step-by-step guides to help you with process.

What advice would you give for filling out a Workplace Alaska employment application?
Fill out the application completely. Workplace Alaska has a cut and paste capability from various word processing applications so if you have a resume in electronic format you can cut text and paste it into the Workplace Alaska application.
When applying for a specific job, read the recruitment bulletin. In your cover letter, be sure to highlight the skills, knowledge and abilities that are specific to the job you are applying for abilities that will qualify you for the job.

I have applied for a job. How long before I hear something?
It varies. Depending on the number of applicants and work schedules of the hiring managers, it may take several weeks to hear from us. You will hear something whether you are invited in for an interview or not.
