Alaska Railroad Leadership

Board of Directors

The Alaska Railroad is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors that is appointed by the Governor of Alaska. Automatic appointments include two commissioners: 

  • Commissioner of Transportation & Public Facilities
  • Commissioner of Community & Economic Development

The remaining five members are appointed with the following stipulations in mind: 

  • One member must have at least 10 years experience managing a U.S. railroad
  • One director must be an employee representing ARRC's labor unions
  • Two positions are designated for residents of Southcentral and Interior Alaska

Except for the commissioners, directors serve 5-year staggered terms.

The board meets at least every quarter and more often if necessary. Board meetings are pulbic except for executive sessions, which may be held to discuss legal, proprietary or personnel matters.

 

Executive Management Team

The Board appoints a President & CEO who manages day-to-day railroad operations. The railroad's management team includes the President/CEO along with vice presidents who oversee business development, corporate affairs, engineering and maintenance functions, finance and accounting, legal matters, mechanical and transportation functions, real estate and facilities, and technology. 

 

Board Rules

Board rules govern the way in which ARRC carries out its functions and purposes.  The Board of Directors is charged with adopting rules to protect and manage property and to protect employees and people who use the railroad's property or services.  Board rules apply to corporation activities and policies that affect the general public.
