The Alaska Railroad Corporation occasionally holds surplus sales events open to the the public including but not limited to:

  • Tie Sale Events
  • Surplus Sale Events and Results
  • Available Surplus including:
    • Retired Rail Cars
    • Retired Vehicles & Equipment
    • Miscellaneous Items

VEHICLE AND EQUIPMENT BY AUCTION

We are making our used surplus vehicles and equipment available through an auction process operated by Grubstake Auction in Anchorage. Grubstake allows online bidding up until the day of the live auction.  Go to Grubstake's web site to view rules and procedures for bidding online and in person; and to find railroad items up for bid:

All ARRC SURPLUS VEHICLES, EQUIPMENT & MISC ITEMS ARE SOLD:  "AS IS, WHERE IS, WITH ALL FAULTS"

We will make every effort to provide as much information as possible on said surplus.

UPCOMING USED TIES SURPLUS SALE EVENTS IN JULY
ALL-DAY EVENTS (8:00 AM to NOON and 1:00 to 4:30 PM ON TWO SATURDAYS: July 11 and Jujly 25, 2015)

 AT THE BIRCHWOOD YARD 

LOCATION: ARRC Birchwood Yard: Take N. Birchwood EXIT onto Birchwood Loop Rd going past the Christian School. Birchwood Loop turns into Birchwood Spur Rd, going towards the Birchwood Airport. Turn left into the yard just past SBS center, follow signs marked tie sale.

TIE SIZE: Ties measure  7-by-8 inches (depth/width) by 8-1/2 feet long. Ties weigh 160-plus pounds.

COST/PAYMENT: $5.00 per tie.  No sorting. Cash or Check only.

RULES & LIMITS:  No Sorting. 50-tie limit per person.

LOGISTICS:

Bring heavy duty trucks & trailers, extra tire (just in case), tie downs, gloves, sturdy shoes & plan for the day.

**Customers are responsible for knowing how heavy a load your trailer & truck can carry**

Forklifts are onsite to assist in lifting. Interested parties must bring enough man-power to help load/move their ties off lifts onto their trailers. 

Railroad personnel will no longer manually handle ANY ties for customers.

ARRC SURPLUS RAILROAD TIE SALES

Tie sale events are held primarily during the summer and early fall.  People who are looking for ties outside the sale event, can often find them for sale by third parties: 

  • Anchorage.Craigslist.org  (Tip:  search under General, Farm+Garden or Materials)
  • Alaskaslist.com
  • Northland Wood Products (Anchorage and Fairbanks)

The Alaska Railroad will consider bulk used ties sales in the amount of 3,000 ties or more. Bulk tie sale transactions cannot be made during a normal public tie sale. Rather, contact Erik Swanson at (907) 265-2630 to make arrangements. Bulk tie sale pricing is: 

  • 3,000+ Ties = $.75ea
  • 6,000+ Ties = $.50ea 

USED TIE DONATIONS

The Alaska Railroad will consider donation of used ties to charitable non-profit organizations (501-c-3 or 501-c-6) that meet our Charitable Contribution policy.
