The wilderness north of Talkeetna is home to some unique Alaskan views: Denali towering over the Susitna River, the meandering twists of the Indian River Valley, the sweeping panorama of Hurricane Gulch. And this wilderness is also home to a unique Alaskan lifestyle.
This remote backcountry is dotted with the homes of Alaskans who prefer to live off the grid. With no roads, the only way to reach this area is by train; the Alaska Railroad’s flagstop service allows passengers to get on or off the train at any point with the wave of a flag. The Hurricane Turn Train is an essential lifeline for these Alaskans.
